When melodic melodies meet with futuristic soundscapes – the results can be flooring. That’s exactly what’s inside Colony’s new ‘Sonder’.

Trinidad’s own Nicholas, best known as Colony, has reimagined what we know and understand about melodic and future bass, revitalizing the soundscapes we all know and love into one neatly packaged tune, ready for the masses to consume.
From the start, Colony showcases an emotional journey with stadium-sized percussions, synths, and a myriad of musical underpinnings to develop the auditory jaunt that is, Sonder.

Sonder is an electrifying journey through the emotional landscapes of melodic future bass, delivering an audio experience that resonates deeply with the listener.
From its opening moments, the track captivates with lush synth layers, processed mellotron chops, and a hypnotic melody that draws you in.
As the drop hits, soaring chords and rhythmic basslines intertwine seamlessly, creating a euphoric wave of sound that’s impossible to resist.
Each element is intricately woven, showcasing masterful production that balances emotional depth with high-energy beats, making Sonder a track you’ll want to replay endlessly.
Colony tells us:
“Sonder is about that existential feeling that I, at least, had a few years ago when I realized that I had become completely disconnected from my inner child in the process of growing older. The song is a sort of thematic reconnection with oneself in that way.”
Sonder stands out not just for its technical brilliance but for its ability to tell a story through sound. Inspired by the word “sonder,” which describes the realization that everyone has a life as complex and vivid as your own, the track takes you on an introspective yet uplifting journey.

How does Sonder differ from your previous works?
Colony: “In 2020, I had sort of hit a bit of a creative wall. I had spent the prior two years pushing Colony super hard. Throughout 2018 I’d been on a cadence of putting out two songs a month, which was incredible for growth but atrocious for my creativity and mental health. Once I hit that wall, it was virtually impossible for me to create anything for a few years. Prior to “Sonder”, the last original material I had put out was the “Echoes EP”, itself some remastered unreleased tracks from my 2018 sessions. That was it. Then the pandemic hit and shook the whole world up and I didn’t write any music for years.”
“Sonder was the first time I had sat down in my DAW since the pandemic and wrote anything that felt honest and exciting for me. It came together relatively quickly too. The main progression that happens in the “verse” was really just a simple piano patch that I sort of resampled and layered and sound designed to hell and back. And, funnily enough, I was barely thinking about specifically what I was doing. It had been ages since I’d done that. In fact, it feels like, when I had started to gain traction and experience as a producer, my process to sound design and songwriting became very regimented and…sort of deliberate. Deliberate isn’t bad, but for me, it felt like, probably due to fears of rejection or trying to stand up to some sort of standards, I had maybe killed the childlike, kidlike instinct of just messing about with no rhyme or reason.”
Whether you’re immersed in its cinematic atmosphere on a late-night drive or letting the drop fuel your energy on the dance floor, Sonder connects on a deeply personal level. With its infectious vibe and emotional resonance, this track is a must-listen for fans of future bass and electronic music lovers alike.
