Pacific Northwestern trap and bass music producer BLXCKHOODIE stops to chat with us about his new guest mix on our platform.
Since the summer of last year, we have been providing coverage for up-and-coming electronic trap music artist BLXCKHOODIE. His music, his identity, his vision, the mysterious allure; all beckon us to bring his rising presence to the world stage.
Our goal has always been to amplify his message and share his innovative sound with a global audience, and we are continuously inspired by his artistic evolution and unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries in the music industry.
First Impressions – whoa!
Our first run-in with the hooded being was his collaborative effort with SLC’s ‘rave dad’ known as Vertekz via their song ‘WE GO HARD‘ on GAWM‘s label Murder We Wrote. (Read more on that HERE)
Thereafter we have supported several of his flips on our YouTube channel such as his rowdy renditions of HOL!’s viral hit ‘Country Riddim‘ and HEKLER’s ‘Ultimate’ – both of which are slappers.
To this day, BLXCKHOODIE has a known knack for flipping sensational soundscapes from acts like LYNY, $uicide Boy$, Skrillex, Cali Swag District, Crankdat, Bandlez, and Deathpact. In addition to his originals like MUTATE and the aforementioned song with Vertekz – ‘WE GO HARD’, you can begin to understand our fascination.
And now, it only seems naturally fitting to bring him into our storm system once more for a guest mix unlike any other we have hosted before. His guest mix is brimming with IDs, original tunes, edits, and remixes sure to make you go bonkers and berzerk.
But first, let’s ask the hooded artist about the mix’s development, and ask him about hot topics we all want to know his take on.
Without further ado, this is BLXCKHOODIE.
Q1. Tell us about this mix! Where did you start and how did it come to be while curating a near-hour-long mix?
BLXCKHOODIE: “For this mix, we wanted to showcase the range and diversity that the BLXCKHOODIE project is capable of. One of the tenets of our sonic style is cinematics, so editing a gripping, tension-packed intro was priority #1, and we feel that goal was well-accomplished.” “Working through it was easier than expected; we just opened up the ID folder, decided on the starting point based on the intro, and went from there!”
“I am very pleased with how it turned out.”
Q2. The song selection and upbeat vibes are prominent throughout the mix. What led you to make the mix in this style vs. other styles of mix building?
BLXCKHOODIE: “With an emphasis on showcasing the elements above, we knew this mix had to be every bit as real as a live performance would feel. Our stage presence is high energy, interactive and we give a “choir conductor’s” energy to the crowd; mixing high energy with strong emotion is our bread and butter, and we wanted to ensure the mix came off as such!”
Q3. Which song, edit, or transition is your favorite in the entire mix? You have to pick one!
BLXCKHOODIE: “Oh boy.. personally, the ID that hits at exactly 29:00 is one of our longest-running, secret sauce bangers. It’s been decided that this will never see the light of day, so it’s always a special bomb to drop whenever the chance presents itself! Also – the transition from that song into our remix of Lyny’s godlike tune “Noxious” – might be one of the slickest ones in the whole mix.”
Q4. Given all the IDs in the mix, does it add more excitement? Or leave fans insatiable and wanting more?
Q5. How do you typically describe your music style or genre?
BLXCKHOODIE: “If we had to codify our style, it would be something along the lines of energetic and emotional with a heavy side of jiu-jitsu.”
Q6. How do you approach collaborations with other artists or producers?
BLXCKHOODIE: “I love this question – typically, a reposted song will catch our attention and we’ll do a dive on that artist’s SoundCloud and reach out via DM’s! Most recently, we submitted a remix for Deathpact’s “Hold On” contest – another artist “Afterparty” also entered, and his remix was one of our favorites. Reached out via Soundcloud dm’s and one month later, we wound up with the very last song in this mix.”
Q7. What’s your take on the role of social media and online platforms in promoting your music?
BLXCKHOODIE: “I really wanna speak on this one; while the importance and usefulness of social media are undeniable, we detest the obsession with metrics and following, which are *typically* determined by the money someone can put behind those things… we’ve never liked the idea of “pay-to-play”, and as of the last 5 years, EDM in-general has felt this way. Probably not the best case study though, as we’ve never been about social media and are rarely online outside of Facebook Messenger or Instagram DM’s.”
