LET’S CHAT w/
BLASTEX
What inspired you to create a horror-themed EP?
“Mostly my love for the entire horror genre in movies. I especially love old-school slasher films and I think that was a major inspiration and the biggest inspiration for the EP of his nature is an artist known as ‘Figure’ whom I’ve known before I even started producing. His music is a major inspiration to me, especially his Monsters albums.”
What emotions or atmosphere were you aiming to create with this EP?
“The main atmosphere I was aiming for was a feeling of dread and the feeling of doom. But there were side feelings I had when making it. Some being, a feeling of death or a feeling of lonesomeness. This whole EP was a very very weird time in my mental state and a weird time for me in general.”
Were there any challenges you faced while producing this EP?
“The main challenge was the drive to make it. I faced a lot of burnout while making it. It was almost like I couldn’t write a song for weeks on end. It wouldn’t end till I started listening to artists I don’t usually listen to. Like, let’s say Glaive or Brakence. I don’t usually listen to them daily. But when I do I end up getting a lot of inspiration from them. But in the case of this EP, it was watching older horror movies. Like [Wes Craven‘s] Nightmare On Elm Street.“
Did you experiment with any new techniques or instruments for this project?
“Yes, I very much did. A prime example is the title track Death To The Wicked where I used Artifacts to make the main bass. Another prime example of it is Deaths Right Hand where I used multiple uses of ring mod and downsampling to create the main and complementary basses!”
What do you hope listeners will take away from your music?
That music is nothing but subjective and that everyone has opinions. And no one can tell you what to do and not to do. There is no right way but there is a wrong way.
Can you discuss the significance of the EP’s title and artwork?
Yes! The Death To The Wicked title will give the listener an understanding of what they will be getting into while the cover art gives the listener a feeling of dread with the fingers going through the eyes, meaning that the creature in the cover art is the wicked.
How do you think your personal experiences influenced the creation of this EP?
Anger of not being accepted is the main influence of the heaviness and when I was younger I had a dream about shadow people I used to call “the wicked” so this EP represents me in a way.
How important is storytelling in your music, particularly in a horror context?
It is immensely important, especially in a horror context. When you have a song that doesn’t tell the story of the character in your story. You really can’t tell via the song that there’s even a story. A prime example of good storytelling is a song I made called Explain Myself with Juhiss.
Where the story is of a relationship that is extremely toxic about the character in which we are telling the story – cannot leave because they love each other so much.
Were there any specific challenges in translating horror themes into music?
I feel like there is always gonna be a challenge in translating the themes of horror into a song. But for this EP the main challenge was getting the atmosphere and energy to balance each other out. Because in one case you can have a song with a ton of energy but no atmosphere.
Lastly, what’s next for you after the release of this Death To The Wicked EP? Any future projects or endeavors on the horizon?
I have many future projects to release. I have an EP based on the planet Saturn and have many more songs to release in the upcoming months and years.
