☀ EDM Weather Reporter: Garth Jones

Los Angeles is home to rising tech house duo Tuna Melt and their culturally diversified homestead is a hotspot for tacos, tapas, and vivacious music that can include all of the above into one rump-shaking and sweat-inducing experience. Thus we have their new flavorful tech house single ever-so-perfectly titled “Taco Y Tapas“.
Being so close to the Mexico/America southwest border, Tuna Melt is no stranger to the authentic Hispanic influence that is shared across the greater Los Angeles area. Their new release “Tacos Y Tapas” celebrates this influence by combining elements of Spanish vocals, thumping house music, and captivating instrumental work you would only hear at a cantina in Spain, or taqueria in Mexico. A true treat to all who hear this “fuego” original tune.
Tuna Melt has done an exceptional job at momentarily transporting listeners to their ideal vacation getaway through their headphones to dance the night away. This release personifies food and culture into one cohesive piece of music – which isn’t a common feat (or feast haha).
They are undeniably at the forefront of bringing fans tunes and remixes they didn’t know they wanted. Especially speaking, their handsome discography is studded with Hollywood’s finest radio-breakers via remixes and flips of Miley Cyrus, The Gorillaz, Bad Bunny, and so many more – be sure to check out their “reheats“, as they call them. But first…

Let’s Chat w/ Tuna Melt
Monsoon Season: This new release garners an international vibe while keeping that stateside house music energy at center focus. What was the most fun aspect of combining the two elements into one party-starting production?
Tuna Melt: Playing around with a whole set of sounds we haven’t really dipped into yet, we especially had fun creating that flamenco guitar line in the B section of the drop.
Monsoon Season: Tacos, tapas, and tequila are three words we all know and love. What is so special to Tuna Melt about this topic and what ultimately led you to make a song around this magical combo?
Tuna Melt: Both of us love cooking and are total foodies. But growing up in Southern California, our friends south of the border and their culture are very near and dear to our hearts, and it is very hard to beat their cuisine. Also after going to Spain, I (Matt) fell in love with the country, the culture, and the food, and has been chasing that tapas food high ever since. So we decided to combine 2 things we love into one delicious song.
Monsoon Season: What is your go-to taco filling/flavor?
Tuna Melt: Joseph: For me, it would have to be Al Pastor, the rich marinades, the savory saltiness, paired with a bit of heat and the sweetness from a little bit of pineapple is unmatched. Gotta have a dab of guacamole and a generous amount of onions and cilantro to top it off.
Matt: A nice juicy carne asada filling or Al Pastor is my go-to when I usually grill. Like Joseph said gotta have some guac, onions, cilantro, some lime, and some salsa verde and roja.

Monsoon Season: Food/drinks before stepping on stage? Is it a go or a no?
Tuna Melt: This is always a tricky decision, it’s important to find a balance that works best for you. too much food or too heavy of a meal and I feel bloated, sluggish, and tired, but you also want to make sure you’ve had a nice healthy meal to keep your energy up and drinking on an empty stomach is rough. Similar to drinks, too much and your transitions might be sloppy, but a couple of drinks to loosen up helps my (Joseph) confidence on stage. As for me (Matt), I like to have a few drinks to loosen up as well and get on a similar wavelength as the crowd. Luckily, since there are two of us, it’s easier to hit the bathroom mid-set.

Monsoon Season: What more can we expect from this delicious duo in the not-so-distant future?
Tuna Melt: Expect us to continue the trend of dropping a remix or original every week for the rest of the year, an official remix for some Grammy-winning artists dropping 9.1.23 [Sept 1st], and some huge collabs we can’t quite talk about yet. Tuna season is just getting started!
