We Chat w/ Billy Wilson, Host of “The Wilson King Podcast” | [Exclusive Interview]

Owner & Host of The Wilson King Podcast, Billy Wilson Answers Some Burning Questions About His Podcast, His Guests, and MORE

Storm Coverage By: Garth Jones

Question 1: Welcome to our storm Billy! Can you tell us about The Wilson King Podcast and how you got into podcasting? Where did this all begin?

Billy: The show started back during the pandemic. We saw all of the hurtful things people kept saying to each other over Facebook arguments so decided to create a platform that people could come and talk about their beliefs in a natural conversation way. It has evolved into much more than that now. I had been listening to a lot of JRE (Joe Rogan Experience) for a few months leading up to this. Those few months I had been thinking to myself about starting a podcast. Then we decided to pull the trigger.

Question 2: Why do you feel podcasts have gained such traction and grew in popularity as of late? Was it inevitable for this format to rise or do you feel there was an ignition point?

Billy: I think it became as popular as it has because of the shutdowns during the pandemic. People had nothing else to do and got bored of the same tv shows. Podcasts gave a new fresh thing that you can watch or just listen to. I honestly think that it was inevitable that they were going to become such a big deal because people loved talk show radio. Podcasting is just that talk show radio but where you can be real and not have to stay within the guidelines of the FCC.

Question 3: Every art form has its artist and podcasting is definitely an art. With that being said, you being an artist in your medium, do you have a podcaster that you look up to or look to for inspiration/motivation?

Billy: I know this is kind of cliché but, I fucking love Joe Rogan. His show is what I want mine to be. When people ask me what is this show about I tell them it’s a “Great Value Joe Rogan“. Not because it’s poor quality but because we don’t fit into just one category of podcasts. We bring on people from music, businesses, artists, and friends. Us being an open format show like we are, I can’t bring myself to put us into one category or the other because you never know what you are going to get week to week.

Question 4: Throughout your tenure in your craft – which guest or what episode has been your favorite to broadcast?

Billy: Man that’s a hard one because all of the episodes I put out is something I have really enjoyed doing. If I have to choose I would have to say two of my favorite ones are with my friend Ally Dengler where we discuss mental health for 2 hours.

The other one was with Kelly Fitzpatrick who runs the 501C The Veterans Purpose Project. That episode we talked about the mission of her organization and mental health in the Armed Forces.

Question 5: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Give us a snapshot of that utopian 2028 timeline!

Billy: If everything goes in my favor I hope to be doing the show full time. Maybe even have a couple in-stone segments set up that’s a branch off of the original.

Question 6: What has been the biggest challenge as of late and how did you overcome that challenge?

Billy: Work/life balance has been the biggest challenge for me. I overcame it by putting time into the show but not so much time that all I am doing is work work work. There was a time I wasn’t going out with my wife or friends. If I had free time I was working on the show. If I wasn’t working on the show, I was at my day to day job.

Question 7: In your opinion. what separates a great podcaster from someone who just blabbers into a mic? What qualities and attributes contribute to someone who showcases being a great conversationalist?

Billy: It all depends on the type of podcast your are doing. If you do a show like Joe Rogan‘s what makes you great is knowing the right questions to ask, keeping the conversation rolling, and not being scared to ask some questions that could be a touchy subject.

Question 8: As the most successful podcast in the world, Joe Rogan holds it down with that title via his controversial and consistent content. What are your takes on him and his podcast?

Billy: Joe Rogan is one of my favorite shows. I don’t agree with everything he says but I love that he has some of the more controversial guests on and he has those hard conversations. I also love that he just doesn’t care how stuff goes and still loves doing what he does.

Question 9: Who are some high-profile guests you would love to have on The Wilson King Podcast? Let’s hear them!

Billy: There are so many I would love to have on the show. I’m going to have to break them down into categories.

EDM: Sullivan King, Kai Wachi, Excision, Ganja White Night, and Liquid Stranger. Metal: Lorna Shore, Slaughter to Prevail, and I Prevail.
Actors/Actresses: Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Anniston, and Matthew McConaughey
Finance: Grant Cardone, Gary Vee [Vaynerchuk], and Mark Cuban.

Question 10: Your podcast has seen the likes of music, business, art, and hometown friends. What is the advantage of keeping your content open-minded and diverse?

Billy: Honestly the advantage is I don’t get bored. I honestly just love talking to people. If I did the same thing week in and week out I know that eventually I would get tired of it.

Question 11: Arguably, dreams cannot be achieved without the help of friends, family, and the utilization of resources and tools. Who or what can you say helped you lay the foundation and allowed your podcast to be the fruit-bearing platform it has become? Give them a shout-out!

Billy: If it wasn’t for Wright Live showing us mad love from the jump I wouldn’t be close to where I am now. Also want to give a shoutout to Matt Eubank over at Mad As Hell Studios for all of the killer lost production he does for each episode. Also, the Pale Garbage Rappers! One last shoutout to all of the fans and everyone who tunes in and shows us love. They are what keeps the firing burning inside to keep going even when things get tough.
