OSSIEN Blends Jazz & Bass in New Three-Track EP titled ‘Quantum Swing‘ on The Electric Movement

Mark Mossien, best known as OSSIEN, is an Atlanta, Georgia-based hybridized electronic dance producer and jazz music saxophonist who has unveiled his latest body of work, the Quantum Swing EP, via the rising record label The Electric Movement.

OSSIEN is shaking up the scene with his fresh Quantum Swing EP. This three-track fusion of smooth jazz melodies and heavy-hitting dubstep is a genre-bending ride that’s both experimental and club-ready.

Quantum Swing garners three tracks, each meticulously crafted to capture the essence of creativity and artistry, all fit for an instrumentalist’s heyday of an auditory picnic, where the atmosphere is set for relaxation and enjoyment, allowing listeners to immerse themselves in a sonic landscape that is both refreshing and inspiring.

The three tunes Samba Sequence, Quantum Swing, and Walk In Bass make up the extended play, all of which showcase the best of both worlds and their consonant connection in genres that span across time and culture.

This impressive EP release is a reflection of OSSIEN‘s unique ability to blend genres, creating a sound that resonates with both dance music enthusiasts and jazz aficionados alike.

Each song utilizes danceable soundscapes, familiar basslines, and a myriad of instrumental intricacies that give listeners the sensation of the future, past, and present all in one immersive experience.

As the rhythms progress, the infectious beats effortlessly invite listeners to move, while the diverse range of instruments blends harmoniously, creating a rich tapestry of sound. The interplay between the melodies encourages a journey that transcends mere auditory enjoyment, allowing for an emotional connection that resonates deeply and lingers long after the final note fades.

OSSIEN tells us:

This EP is heavily inspired by the riveting and unpredictable nature of both modern bass music and jazz and blues music. The goal was to convey the energy of big band jazz and blues while maintaining a modern 2020s EDM sound in terms of engineering, mixing, and mastering. Everything heard within the EP was done with virtual library sampling and midi programming to achieve the sounds heard in the tracks – though I do actually play saxophone and have for 15 years” – says OSSIEN

Let’s chat with OSSIEN about Quantum Swing, our Monsoon HQ-favorite tune from the EP, and his plans for 2025.

Q1: Tell us the backstory of Quantum Swing. Where did the idea come from and how did the idea translate to a usable format for a song?

OSSIEN: The idea came from my passion for big-band jazz music and heavier EDM. There’s something about double-time jazz, specifically – especially the MARKEDLY fast tempo that you sometimes hear- that I find so riveting. It’s raucous, it’s exciting, it’s HOT, it’s unpredictable. It’s just really interesting to me. And I found that Drum N Bass was the perfect subgenre of EDM that represented that same CHARACTER as double time, 300-340BPM style big band jazz. It’s just CRAZY, it’s raucous, it’s fun. The energy is the same to me.

And see, bass music is the same way in general. It’s UNPREDICTABLE, it’s cool, it’s wild. to me, adding jazz to bass music makes perfect sense and I’m surprised it hasn’t been done more.

From the beginning, the mission was always to have jazz and EDM tell one story. in terms of the idea translating into a usable format, that came as a result of a TON of failed attempts and weird songwriting. More on this in Q2.

Q2: From start to finish, the presence of jazz music takes center focus and blends seamlessly with the infusion of bass music. What were some challenges in the development process of combining the two often dissonant genres and how did you overcome them?

OSSIEN: I think the biggest challenge for this combo is that to even make it make any sense, you definitely need your chops in both jazz and EDM. I’ve luckily been playing and listening to jazz for over 15 years now so I really understand it as a genre.

More broadly though, both jazz and bass music are so STRONG, from a songwriting perspective. for the longest time I struggled to have them tell one unified TALE that actually made sense. I wrote plenty of songs that felt like two songs instead of one- and these songs were like movies that had too many characters. They were just too hard to follow and didn’t make enough sense at a high level.

The biggest way I overcame them- my biggest aha moment- was the use of one unifying motif between the electronic sound design and the big band jazz lines. This is what I found started tying the genres in a way that made a LOT of sense.

Q3: What’s next for Ossien in 2025? Let us, your listeners, and fans know what we can expect in the not-so-distant future!

OSSIEN: Feeling so much gratitude, excitement, and positive anticipation for the future right now. Subtronics recently shared a remix I did which has had me on cloud 9 for about two days straight. He’s one of my favorite artists for sure. But, definitely am expecting a lot of show bookings right around the corner here. I’ve been in jazz music for so long and I feel that it’s really time to show the world this unique sound. Jazz and EDM have been a long time coming… it’s time to see how far it can be taken.
