Let’s chat w/ PRPL
Q1: Welcome back to our downpour, PRPL. What can you tell us about the creation, creative process, and production of ‘MadMan‘ – your new song on our label?
PRPL: How’s it going? As much as I can tell I just threw a knife at my computer and that’s all I remember haha. No, but on a serious note, I’ve been inspired by 80s horror theme music and music composers like John Carpenter. So, trying to implement that into this track was challenging. Anytime I begin a new track I usually start with the drop but for this song I started with the synths and breaks. I felt they mattered more in this project.
Q2: How did your journey unto music begin and how has it come this far as PRPL – a performing and recording electronic artist in Salt Lake City, Utah?
PRPL: I’ve always been into music since a young age. The first instrument I had was a broken Casio CTK-150 someone threw away in a dumpster at the apartments I lived in but I loved playing on that at the age of 9. It died eventually and I finally just bought a new keyboard.
As for my journey from 16 to 17 my friend gave me a copy of Ableton 8 (ps. I still use it cause it works fine.) I tried making rap beats and they were not very good but some old friends showed me Satisfaction by Benny Benassi and that kicked it off.
As for my PRPL project, it first started as an indie dance idea before I decided to make it the whole thing plus I had to kill my old alias. People who know will know what it is. That’s a whole other story.
Q3: Where does your fascination with the horror style and spooky vibes come from and how did it become a significant and signature aspect of your music life?
PRPL: The inspiration comes from horror movies and shows honestly I’ve been fascinated by that stuff at a very young age from reading comics like Spawn and watching movies like Freddy vs Jason.

Q4: Who/what inspires, motivates, or influences you creatively? Give those folks a shoutout and let them know who they are!
PRPL: Damn let’s see I have a long list but I’d say Knife Party for sure, the lord himself Skrillex, Pegboard Nerds, and many others with the EDM side for the synthwave community I’d say Dance With The Dead, The Midnight, Carpenter Brut, Extra Terra and Gunship.

Q5: What more can we expect from PRPL in 2023? More music, more events, and more horror, we hope!
PRPL: Oh of course I’m finishing off a special EP coming soon possibly in November. I’m about to drop a free HALLOWEEN song. It’s traditional every year and maybe a new PRPL mix as for events I don’t got anything lined up yet if you know anything give me a call (laughs).
