1. What initially inspired you to pursue a career in DJing/music production?

2. How do you typically describe your music style or genre?

KALIBR: I like to classify my style as a mix between synth-wave, cyberpunk, and dubstep! Happily known as cyberstep.

3. How do you stay updated with the latest trends and developments in electronic music?

KALIBR: SoundCloud is definitely the biggest thing when it comes to staying up-to-date on music. It’s the voice of the people when it comes to the latest and greatest music among other artists.

4. Can you share some insights into your favorite piece of equipment or software for music production?

KALIBR: One of my favorite pieces of equipment I use is my TC Electronic Clarity M for monitoring. It allows me to have all those metrics easily available in a small compact desktop unit and makes monitoring during the production process a breeze.

5. Can you share a memorable or significant moment in your career as a DJ/producer?

KALIBR: One of my favorite moments as a producer was when Excision downloaded my music! It was probably one of the biggest motivating factors for me when creating music. I remember that moment when I felt like my music wasn’t good enough. I just remember that my music is way better now than it was, and if he liked it back then he will love it now! Or that’s the goal anyway.

6. What advice would you give to aspiring DJs/producers who are just starting out?

KALIBR: Just keep going, it sucks at first, it’s super difficult to get into production, but if you love it, and you have ideas just write write write! You will start to learn and create things that you never thought possible and it’s incredible what your mind can do once you give it the tools to be successful!

7. Can you share any behind-the-scenes insights into your preparation for a live performance or DJ set?

KALIBR: It’s a lot of ensuring the outfit is ready, clean, and presentable! I always try to get my shows to have an insane amount of suspense in the beginning when I walk out on stage. It’s a really fun way to get the crowd interested in your project and the performance. You are setting the stage, literally for your performance by atmosphere-building and getting them into the mindset of a heavy dark, and ethereally intense experience.

8. What’s your take on the role of social media and online platforms in promoting your music?

KALIBR: So for me, social media is a massive way to engage with my audience. I have also found that platforms such as VR (virtual reality) are amazing avenues to acquiring new fans as well! Playing VR shows has become one of my new favorite pastimes and it’s a lot of fun. VR DJing is a huge untapped market, and it’s amazing to be able to connect with your fans who enjoy your music from across the world in a virtual environment.

9. How do you handle feedback and criticism from your audience or fellow musicians?

KALIBR: I appreciate all feedback and criticism as a way to get better, but it has to be constructive. It’s important to understand that there are haters out there who will try and discourage you for any reason they see fit, so it’s important to be able to have thick skin and look past that.

10. How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals as an artist?

KALIBR: I love going to the gym and working on myself and my personal goals. Knocking off one or two of my goals per day and physically knocking them off the whiteboard checklist is a great way for me to physically see progress and keep my motivation up!

11. How do you see the relationship between visuals and music in enhancing the live performance experience?

KALIBR: I feel blending the visuals and the music is a super nice way for you to communicate all aspects of your project to the listener. It’s super important for them to understand your message and I feel visuals are a great way to do that! And everyone loves a good visual performance!
